Clarifying History

Days before Christmas 1988, a terrorist bomb destroyed a U.S.-flagged Boeing 747 at 31,000 feet, scattering 259 people aboard Pan Am flight 103 over 845 square miles and killing 11 in Lockerbie, Scotland.

The Living Memorial remembers the 270 victims killed in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, including 11 in Lockerbie, Scotland. Aged 2 months to 82 years old, they came from 21 countries.

Legacy Stories

Ordinary people, united by tragedy, respond with humanitarian and precedent-setting acts. Some locals took in total strangers, helped survivors and victim’s families from across the world, alike. Others washed and ironed the victims clothing or helped with transportation, childcare, including funeral and flower arrangements. Some sought to bring the terrorists to justice, while others targeted bringing meaningful change to aviation security, terror victims' restitution, flyers' rights. From this tragedy emerged stories of loss, sacrifice, hope, resilience, generosity, and advocacy.
